About The Designer
I draw my inspiration from my grandmother who made her living as a dressmaker. When I visited her as a child the pathway from her living room to the sewing room was a landmine of straight pins hidden in the carpet. On the living room floor she would cut out her patterns while I dangled my bare feet from a place of safety on the sofa. When the “ladies” came to her house for appointments, I'd occupy a space in the corner of her sewing room, running my fingers through boxes of pretty buttons and over spools of brightly colored thread. She tried earnestly to teach me the trade, but at the time I preferred paper dolls and playing dress-up.
Almost thirty years would pass before I took an interest in the craft. Today, like my grandmother, I cut out patterns on the living room floor to the sound of old black and white movies playing in the background. Straight pins are always hiding in the carpet for my bare feet to find. My tiny sewing room is filled with jars of buttons handed down to me from generations past, and vintage fabrics passed down from a lineage of great seamstresses and quilt makers.
I love taking a sleepy item from the past and waking it up to the twenty-first century. I rarely repeat a design. I let the garment tell me how it wants to be embellished, and seldom do any two want the same thing. My designs are a collage of history, whimsy, and independent spirit. My desire is for you to enjoy wearing my clothes as much as I enjoy making them. |
